As retired captain and Port State Control inspector for more than 20 years in Gijón (Spain) as soon I saw the video of the Oasis of the seas leaving Turku in her maiden voyage I noticed life boats were sticking out from the ship's side, not proper position in case of rought sea, and I so commented in webmar.com site where seafarers use to exchange opinions about our profession.
Is funny what Mr Malcom said: "we have to remind QM2 has been designed for North Atlantisc and Oasis of the seas for fairer weather". The trading area of the Oasis is hurricane zone and unless she expected to have shelter in port in such a case, (dangerous decision having in consideration the great surface of her superestructure) vessel should proceed to open sea.
On the other hand SOLAS Convention unless ship has some kind of exemption from flag state, should be suitable for all weather.

i have worked on passenger liners from the 1960,s when they were graceful beautiful ships with elagance and beauty. i find this a monsrosatie. of the worst , bad taste, i cant beleive that this is where cruising has lead to. thank god i was in that world when it was a different time, so modern and clinical only you america would produce something so ugly and in such bad taste ,im disgusted

Maureen,
If I can arrange time off at work, we will be on the Norweigan Jade leaving February 14th from Barcelona. Is this the same time as you or not? We too would be first time cruisers and had the same questions as you. Although it sounds like winter weather isn't very warm, considering it will be -40 degrees when we leave our home, anything above freezing will be wonderful to us!!!

Sailed the Norway 1997, 98, 99--(backtoback) and 2000. This was my first experience at cruising. I loved it, and spent many a late night sitting by myself on the top deck taking in the quiet, and salty sea air.
The Norway turned me into a cruise addict, and in the past 12 years I have taken a total of 15 cruises. However, The Norway was truly an amazing experience and none can be compared to it!

The muster station drill on our recent Solstice cruise was the least useful I've ever done.

We all gathered at some internal point (on the 'Promenade' deck, but inside). There were hundreds of people, all crushed together. Then they tried to read out cabin numbers and get us to indicate if the occupants were present, but it was hard to hear the crew member who was calling the numbers. There didn't seem to be any re-check of the cabins that had not answered. In any case he hadn't finished when a video started, showing the actual safety instructions. This was projected TV screens at various points around the room, but you needed to be able to see the screens; I overheard comments afterwards to the effect that many people hadn't been able to see the screens and therefore hadn't heard the instructions. It all seemed very disorganised and ineffective, particularly as we weren't required to put on the lifejackets, nor even bring them with us. (Thinking about it, there wouldn't have been room for everyone to congregate if they lifejackets on.) I assume that people were supposed to learn what to do with the lifejackets from the video, but as I said many/most people couldn't see it. So pretty much a waste of time; even MSC did it better.
