As part of TUI’s product update: starting in summer 2019, British cruise brand ‘Marella Cruises’ (formerly Thomson) will go all-inclusive.

TUI also confirmed that (Thomson) ‘Spirit’ will exit Marella’s fleet November 2018, and it will also welcome the Marella Explorer 2. The former ‘Celebrity Century’ will join Marella’s fleet for summer 2019.

The Marella Discovery (formerly RCI’s Splendour) and Marella Discovery 2 (formerly RCI’s Legend) joined the fleet in 2016 and 2017, respectively, offering newer tonnage to British guests.

Malcolm says: I have really enjoyed Thomson’s product in the past. Marella cruises (I still don’t like the new name) now have an almost entirely new fleet of bigger second-had ships.  Part of the attraction for me was Thomson’s smaller/charming ships, although they were generally well-worn.

It will be interesting to see how the product transfers to these bigger ships, although  they are all considerably smaller than the major lines vessels, but generally bigger than Olsen’s and CMV’s vessels.

After almost nine years service, the ship that started the TUI Cruises brand has left its fleet.

TUI bid farewell to the ‘Mein Schiff 1’ (‘My Ship 1’) last week, having operated the vessel between 2009 and 2018, serving the German market.

The 1,924 guest ship was originally built at the Meyer Werft shipyard, Germany, in 1996 as ‘Galaxy’ for Celebrity Cruises. At 76,522 gross tonnes she was considered a mega-ship at the time.

Celebrity ‘Galaxy’ is well know to Brits as the ship that singer/personality Jane McDonald gained fame onboard. She was a cruise ship singer featured in the 1998’s fly-on-the-wall TV series, ‘The Cruise’.

Mein Schiff 1 has been transferred to sister company Marella Cruises*. She will be refurbished over the next month and renamed ‘Marella Explorer’ to serve Marella cruises British customers.  She will join ‘Marella Explorer II’, the former ‘Celebrity Century’.

The new 110,000 gross tonne ‘Mein Schiff 1’ enters service for TUI Cruises in May 2018 and will have capacity for 2,900 guests.

*(Marella cruises is the new silly name for the re-branded ‘Thomson Cruises’ )

Malcolm says: Thought for the day – ‘My Ship’ is no longer ‘their Ship’ it’s ‘Our Ship’!
