They Have Killed Off The Upgrade Fairy

Remember the “Upgrade Fairy”? You know, you book a cruise cabin, arrive onboard to experience the joy of finding that you have been upgraded to a better (more expensive) cabin.

It was of course completely unpredictable. There was no rhyme or reason that mortal passengers could understand, to explain the magic. Sometime the upgrade fairy waved her magic wand, other times she did not. (I am assuming “her/she” is her preferred pronoun. Apologies if I am wrong).

Anyway, the Norwegian Cruise Line and other lines appear to have killed off the fairy. In the case of NCL, She has been replaced with on-line technology called the “Upgrade Advantage”.

…my only issue with Ambassador’s entertainment is that I find a few of their shows to be a bit surreal. However, I still enjoyed them!

Hi Peter, thanks for the feedback. I did not know P&O had also killed the fairy. I’m a big fan of Ambasdador. Only their hardware (aircon & plumbing) can occasionally let them down. Both ships are very nice, in diffent ways!

P&O are already using the same process, we have a short three night cruise booked with balcony cabins, and we were invited to bid at least £60pp for a junior suite, or £200pp for a suite. (We declined)

Conversely, we did a six night trip on Ambition earlier this month with an outside cabin booked at the saver rate. Two weeks before sailing we received our cabin number, and we’re very pleased to have been allocated a junior suite on deck 10. I would add that this cruise was most enjoyable, and the show team on board were by far the best that we had ever experienced on any cruise line.

    Regards

    Peter
