Viking Are Coining It!

April 13, 2024

Viking Ocean posted revenue per passenger day of $714 for its ocean cruises and $792 for its river cruises in 2023, according to its recent profit filing.

The company operated 70 river vessels that sailed at 95.5 per cent occupancy during the year and nine ocean-going vessels that sailed at 93.5 per cent occupancy.

Viking carried a total of 366,730 passengers on river cruises and 243,291 on ocean voyages.

Outlining its growth pace, Viking as maintained an occupancy level in the 93-percentage range since 2017, while increasing its capacity from 3.4 million passenger days to 6.5 million and growing its revenue from $1.9 billion in 2017 to $4.7 billion in 2023.

More than 90 per cent of its passengers are sourced in North America, with the remainder coming from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand primarily.

Malcolm says: I’ve always wondered how Viking charges so much, yet are so very successful. $792 pp x 7 is $11,088  per couple (or about  £8,762) for a 7 night ocean cruise. Interestingly, the ‘economis of scale ‘ offered by their ocean cruise ships do not reflect significantly in their fares, when you compare their ocean and river gates. In other words: their ocean cruises are only fractionally cheaper than their river cruises.

I guess wealthy people are prepared to pay ‘top dollar’ for quality (and I mean dollars). Most Viking reviews that I have ever read are very favourable.

I hadn’t realised that it is American passengers that keep them afloat (pardon the pun). Saying that, I’d probably use them myself if I had the money!
